History of Cartography

The Map Library has the country's most comprehensive collection of material on the history of cartography. It acquires books, pamphlets and journals on maps and mapping for all periods and places. It holds 16 current journals which deal with historical maps and mapping.

Standard reference works and cartobibliographies are available on open access in the Maps Reading Room. These include

  • The History of Cartography volumes by Brian Harley and David Woodward, and
  • G√ľnter Schilder's Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica.

We also have a large collection of facsimiles of antiquarian atlases, such as the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum series. It holds printed catalogues of many other libraries with holdings of historical maps. The Library continues to collect academic monographs, exhibition catalogues and reference material relating to maps and mapping in the widest sense.
