The Saur microfiche biographical archives listed below are stored in cabinets in the Humanities Reading Room and individual fiches can be requested for consultation from the staff at the Humanities - Floor 1 Reference Enquiry Desk. The archives reproduce entries from hundreds of biographical dictionaries pertaining to a particular language area or cultural sphere. Each series is arranged in one alphabetical sequence. Printed indexes, where available, are placed on the open shelves with other biographical dictionaries in the HLR 920 sequence. The World Biographical Information System [onsite access only], which also serves as an index to the archives, includes the digitised version of Series 1 and Series 2 of the British biographical archive.

British and Irish biographies
British and Irish biographies 1840-1940, published by Chadwyck Healey, contains over 300 biographical sources, reproduced on microfiche, arranged in six parts. Chadwyck Healey has produced an alphabetical name index to parts one to three; this index, which is on microfiche on open access in the Humanities Reading Room at HLM920.041, is the most effective way of searching the first three parts. In the case of parts four to six users need to consult the list of enclosed with the microfiche index at HLM920.041 to see whether any of the individual sources is likely to be relevant to their research.
