Checklist of General Strike Newspapers of 1926

The following British Isles newspapers, news sheets, journals, and magazines, produced around the period of the General Strike of May 1926, are held in British Library Newspapers, and form probably the finest research collection of its kind.  Many of the items listed are extremely rare; some are almost certainly uniquely extant copies.

The General Strike began on 3 May and finished on 12 May. The issues of periodicals scheduled for publication between 5 and 15 May inclusive were typically affected, and these are listed if they appeared. Between these dates, newspapers were often dominated by news of the General Strike. Occasionally, issues are listed which are dated earlier than the 5th or later than the 15th, if they are of genuine emergency strike bulletins or of other periodicals which still retained subtitles such as 'strike edition' or similar. Issues held of periodicals not carrying a precise date, usually those produced monthly, are also listed if published at any time during, or for, May 1926.

The Checklist is in progress and currently contains over 250 bibliographical entries; periodical updates to this website will contain additional entries. However, the Checklist is already complete for all periodicals held which were published in the Isle of Man and in Wales.

The main aims in compiling the Checklist of General Strike Newspapers of 1926 are:

  • to promote one of the rare and special collections held by the Newspaper Library;
  • to produce a comprehensive bibliographical listing of all relevant issues of newspapers and other periodicals held in the Library to aid both labour history and periodical publishing researchers and bibliographers;
  • to provide a thorough overview of the range of national and regional periodical publishing in the British Isles during one of the most interesting episodes in 20th-century publishing history;
  • to chart the reaction of the newspaper and periodical press to the General Strike.

Entries in the Checklist conform to the following model, although not all entries will contain each bibliographical element:

  • Full title. Newspaper Library shelfmark.
    Place of publication : Date(s) : No(s).
    Variant editions, numeration, multiple copies held, and/or other publishing information.
    Variant title information.
    Language, if other than English (e.g. in Welsh and English).
    Format (e.g. news sheet, typescript, illustrations).
    Printer's and/or publisher's statement, transcribed from the colophon or elsewhere on the newspaper.

Most of these items are consulted in the Newsroom at St Pancras.  Some, however, may have to be consulted in the Rare Books and Music Reading Room at St Pancras.
