World and traditional music: Asia

The Sound Archive's world and traditional music collections include music from across Asia.

Collection overview

The Sound Archive's collections of unpublished recordings comprise some 76 separate ethnographic collections including 13 made in the first decades of the 1900s on wax cylinder, and include recordings made in a broad range of countries. Published recordings span the whole of the 20th century beginning with early issues on the Indian label Ramagraph and including, for example, rare issues of field recordings by Kurosawa Takatomo in 1943 in Taiwan, published by Victor. Published holdings also include items released by institutions on limited distribution such as the several box sets of CDs and books from the Korean (Munhwa) Broadcasting Company.
