Early European and US dissertations

The British Library has a number of early dissertations in the London collections which can be found listed in Explore the British Library. The Sloane collection of printed books includes a large number of medical dissertations submitted at Dutch universities, in particular, a magnificent set of  Leyden medical dissertations.

In addition, the Document Supply service has a collection of early dissertations, most of which are not recorded separately in the British Library's catalogues. These dissertations are mainly from European and North American universities and date from between 1590 and 1952. Contemporary forms of name have been retained and should be used for ordering, as they determine the filing order on the shelf. If you are trying to trace a particular dissertation from one of the universities listed and the date range given indicates that we may have it, you can order the dissertation into the Rare Books and Music Reading Room at St Pancras:

1) Complete a paper form for applying for DSC material
2) Enter DISS and the name of the university as the shelfmark
3) Enter date, author and title.
