The British Library has extremely rich collections relating to the novelist, poet and playwright D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930). Within Modern British Collections these include first and later editions of his novels, short stories, plays and poetry, as well as critical studies, biographies, and literary journals in which his work appears or is discussed.
NO! MR LAWRENCE!
No, Mr. Lawrence, it's not like that!
I don't mind telling you
I know a thing or two about love,
perhaps more than you do.
And what I know is that you make it
too nice, too beautiful.
It's not like that, you know; you fake it.
It's really rather dull.
"No! Mr Lawrence!" by D. H. Lawrence, in Pansies (London: Privately published by P. R. Stephenson, 1929, in an edition of fifty copies). Shelfmark: Cup.1000.c.1
The Library also holds foreign publications, pirate editions, manuscripts (including playscripts from the Lord Chamberlain's Collection), photographs and sound recordings by or relating to Lawrence.
Lawrence's publications are entered individually in Explore the British Library.
Except for certain posthumous editions, copyright in Lawrence's work ceased on 31st December 2000. This has meant that there are now a number of full text versions available online. Many of these can be consulted via the Literary works and criticism page of the D H Lawrence Resources at the University of Nottingham site. That site, as well describing the University of Nottingham's own considerable printed and manuscript collections, is also a comprehensive international gateway to Lawrence resources online and offline.
