Consulting Western Manuscripts – specific conditions of use

Readers must comply with our conditions of use of the Library's Reading Rooms and there are specific conditions for Readers consulting Western Manuscripts.

The Manuscripts Reading Room has the following additional requirements:

  • Readers wishing to examine watermarks should not lift the manuscript from the bookrest, but rather request the use of the appropriate equipment.
  • Tracing is not allowed from illuminated manuscripts or artistic drawings, and in other cases only by permission.
  • Self-service photocopying is not allowed for any Manuscripts material. Readers may request copies of manuscripts from the Library's Imaging Services.
  • Some Manuscripts material may be available to copy, for personal reference purposes, using self-service photography. Any copies must not be used for a commercial purpose and copyright, data protection and privacy laws may still apply. Please speak to staff in the Reading Room for more information.
