A large part of this collection relates to the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society which was founded in 1839. The society’s aim was to secure the abolition of slavery in general and particularly in America. The collection includes the Minute Books of the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society, and also papers relating to conferences held in 1840, 1842 and 1843.

changes of government, major cabinet reconstructions and political crises
during the reign of Queen Victoria. The collection starts with the first
political crisis of the Queen's reign in May 1839, the Bedchamber
crisis, and ends with the reconstruction of Lord Salisbury's cabinet
in October 1900.
