This series of reports represents an impressive achievement of 19th century reform and administration.
In series one there are 399 reports in all, covering 414 towns and villages, and their findings - extensive, graphic and meticulous - examine every topic which, in the opinion of the Inspector concerned, affected the moral and physical welfare and the government of the locality he visited.
Series two has 799 reports on varied districts throughout England and Wales, and provides a detailed picture of social and industrial conditions during the late 19th century and the early 20th century.
