This collection is divided into 3 parts;
Part 1 contains the Minutes of the Ragged School Union and Shaftesbury Society, 1844-1944. The collection highlights in particular the position of children within society and the gross abuse and deprivation many of them had to endure.
Part 2 contains an unbroken run starting from 1849 to 1875 of the Ragged School Union Magazine. The magazine shocked its readers with accurate descriptions of the squalor and the poverty that surrounded them. The magazine also offers an insight and analyses of the whole range of social problems suffered by the industrialised world in the 19th century.
Part 3 concentrates on the years 1876 to 1907, and contains the Ragged School Union Magazine for these years. This was the time when Booth and Rowntree were both producing their greatest work, and a period when a manifestly wealthy society was still the home of innumerable white slaves, destitutes and outcasts.
