The Olympics & Paralympics 2012 web site collection

UK Web Archive [10KB]Introduction to the UK web archive

Despite our apparent dependence on the web as the information choice of first resort, websites are extremely ephemeral, constantly changing and even disappearing. often they contain information that is only available online, and as a result large amounts of invaluable scholarly, cultural and scientific resources are being lost to future generations. To address this problem, the British Library has been archiving selected websites since 2005 and making them publicly available through the UK Web Archive

The Games website collection

It is estimated that the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games will generate a huge Web presence in the UK, as was the case with the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, reflected in the National Library of Australia’s collection of Australian online publications, Pandora. The British Library is selecting websites about London 2012 which are intended to reflect not only the events themselves but all aspects of the Games, including their social and economic impact on London and the UK. The collection was started in January 2008 and includes the websites of UK athletes, local councils, opinion forums and the Games’ corporate sponsors. New websites will continue to be added to the collection up to and beyond the Games in 2012.
