Pensions regulator wins new power on buy-outs

The regulator has been given new powers to intervene in pensions buy-outs if it believes the interests of pensions holders are at risk in an amendment to the Pensions Bill which was rushed through in response to a new model of buy-out, where companies acquire ailing businesses with well-funded pension schemes, in order to increase the surplus on the scheme and take money out of it.

This article looks at the impact of the 2007 credit crunch on banks, regulators and financial firms and argues that it presents an opportunity to pension funds, which have comparatively better liquidity and can use it to buy equity which is likely to provide a good return on investment.
