This article introduces the work of a community-led programme which aims to improve the health of Aboriginal people in Australia by upgrading sanitation facilities in the public housing they occupy. The programme has demonstrated that insanitary conditions in Aboriginal housing are not due to tenant vandalism, but to faulty construction and lack of maintenance. However their conclusions have been consistently resisted and undermined by the mainstream policy and research communities.
