Disabled people in the UK are vulnerable to hate crime, but are faced with barriers to having action taken against their tormentors. The government's new Hate Crime Action Plan pledges new Crown Prosecution Service guidance on prosecuting disability hate crime by December 2009 and advice for health and social care professionals on supporting disabled victims of crime by 2011. More generally, the action plan promises to facilitate and encourage joint working among all public bodies involved in tackling hate crime. However, campaigners are critical of the lack of measures in the joint action plan to mandate joint working.
