Welfare Reform on the Web (May 2011): Services for the disabled - UK

Broken dreams

L. Powell

Community Living, vol. 24, no.3, 2011, p. 22-23

The proposed cut in Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI) and restriction of the government's Home Ownership for People with Long Term Disabilities scheme to people with significant cash to contribute threaten to destroy the independence of thousands of disabled people. The changes could make home ownership impossible for people with long term disabilities and force them into residential care at greater cost to the taxpayer. This article describes a campaign by Advance Housing to get the measures reversed.
