HMRC criticised over payment of interns

The Low Pay Commission (LPC) has criticised HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for lax enforcement of the national Minimum Wage laws and payment of interns. In its annual report the LPC has recommended HMRC takes stronger action on unpaid internships.

The government is seeking to reverse the growing culture of unpaid internships. The national internship scheme will ask firms to pay young people doing work experience and will warn that they could otherwise face legal challenges under the national minimum wage legislation.
