The coalition government plans to bar many low quality vocational courses which fail to prepare pupils for higher education or work from school and college league tables. This is intended to prevent head teachers from pushing pupils onto such courses to improve their place in the rankings. Ofqual, the examinations regulator, will also be told to take a tougher line to ensure that poor quality vocational courses do not attain state accreditation.
