Job Centre Plus may in the future be able to link benefit receipt to attendance at skills training. While welcoming this approach in principle, the author points out some pitfalls. He warns that ordering claimants to attend training under threat of loss of benefits risks demotivating them so that they do not learn. Job Centre Plus advisers should also be fully cognisant of the training opportunities available and ensure that they send claimants to suitable courses. From the training providers point of view, having to take on reluctant claimants sent for compulsory training could adversely affect their performance and lead to cancellation of contracts.
