JobCentre Plus was created by the merger of the Employment Service and Benefits Agency. The idea was that efficiency gains could be made and that, for all people of working age, a work-first ethic should be attached to benefit receipt. Its essential purpose was to increase the number of economically active people able to work and compete for jobs. Research shows that the introduction of JobCentre Plus did indeed increase the rate of job matching for benefits claimants of working age.
