SOCIAL WORK IN EUROPE: RADICAL TRADITIONS, RADICAL FUTURES

K. Hatton

Social Work in Europe, vol.8, 2001, p.32-43

Increasingly the activities of social work professionals are being framed within the exigencies of a mixed economy of welfare which promotes regulation and control rather than user empowerment. The article looks at current concerns and points to the lessons that can be learned from radical social work. Suggests ways in which a new radical agenda can be developed to promote social inclusion through user empowerment, capacity building, active citizenship, self-help and overcoming the "them and us mentality" that divides clients from professionals.
