The current Argentinian pension system has three tiers: a universal basic state pension, an earnings-related compensation benefit for service rendered before July 1994, and for the third tier, participation in either a public defined contribution plan or a private pension scheme. FRANCE AGREES TO EU-WIDE PENSION FUNDS

Reports that France has withdrawn its opposition to new EU laws that will allow pension funds to operate across Europe. Pan-European funds will be regulated under a "light touch" regime and will face few constraints on the type of investments they make.
