The future debate on occupational pensions in continental Europe will no longer focus solely on the economic efficiency values of these pensions but on their role in the European social protection system. The European countries will develop an increasing number of technical rules imposing forms of equality and solidarity within occupational pension schemes. Paper examines the first signs of these changes.
