The first step has been taken towards achieving convergence of the variety of minimum wage rates in force as a result of the 35 - hour week in France. A recent report issued by the Economic and Social Council suggests a number of ways in which this can be achieved, ranging from short- to medium-term solutions. The government is expected to issue proposals based on the council's report in the near future. One of the central problems is the cost of bringing the hourly minimum wage rate into line with the range of guaranteed monthly rates now in existence.
