In continental Europe children in public care are looked after by social pedagogues. Pedagogy can be explained as bringing up children, looking after their education, nurturing and socialisation. The pedagogues share the children's everyday lives, eating with them, helping with homework, watching television, liaising with parents and building up the children's self-esteem. Pedagogy can cover child care, youth work, family support services and secure custody as well as residential care. Article considers lessons this approach could have for the UK.
