PLANS FOR PERSONAL IDENTITY NUMBERS

J.Carvel

The Guardian, January 7th 2004, p.5

Reports on the announcement of plans to allocate a unique identity number to every UK resident as part of a £240m scheme to compile a population register for use by government. The identity number will supersede NHS and National Insurance numbers. The register will include name, address, date and place of birth of those usually resident in the UK. The government has authorised the Office for National Statistics to develop the scheme over the next 18 months.
