The article explores the reasons behind the frequent failure of mainstream urban regeneration projects and considers Integrated Area Development strategies as an alternative. These promote social innovation in development agendas and in governance (through the democratisation of decision-making), allowing the needs of deprived or excluded groups to be placed at the heart of strategies and the importance of local cultures to be recognised.
