Responsible promotion of vocational degrees should include consideration of its effects on students as they resolve tensions between choices available to them. This paper draws from exploratory focus groups with students, looks at the tensions, and at whether their resolution may lead to failure to engage in scholarly learning e.g. avoiding theoretical training in favour of practical aspects.
