A Royal College of Midwives survey found that 20% of respondents reported depressive symptoms after childbirth. However, fewer than half of all mental health trusts have any kind of perinatal service. To remedy this, NICE proposes managed clinical care networks for each population of 25,000 - 50,000 live births per year.

An investigation has revealed that in 27 cases dating back to 1996, action plans drawn up by trusts in response to independent reports on fatal attacks by mental patients are yet to be signed off by strategic health authorities. This means that problems have not been resolved many years after the event, with serious implications for public safety and the welfare of mental patients.

This article analyses key elements of Everybody's Business, guidance on the development of integrated mental health services for older people issued by the Department of Health in 2005. It aims to provide a useful checklist of issues to be considered when developing and delivering services for older people with mental health needs. It ends by suggesting how the guidance might be made more effective when applied to individuals in specific circumstances.

This article presents the results of a qualitative research project which investigated difficulties faced by adults with autism and Asperger's Synfrome in accessing advocacy services in Northwest England. Findings show that people's lives are being made more difficult by problems of late diagnosis and not being eligible for support services. There is a lack of information about advocacy services available and how they can benefit both people with autism and carers. Calls for independent advocacy support to be made available to support carers and ensure that people's rights are upheld.

Local authority partnership boards were introduced as a mechanism for turning the high ideals of the Valuing People White Paper into reality. Unfortunately some partnership boards have focused on ensuring the full involvement of people with learning disabilities in their deliberations rather than on driving forward change. This article looks at ways in which partnership boards could raise their profile and increase their influence.

This article discusses the barriers to going on holiday faced by people with learning difficulties. These include financial constraints and lack of accessible information. Some holiday organisations which actively welcome this group of people are described.

Financial pressures on local government mean that annual increases in expenditure in real terms are not keeping pace with growing demand for services for people with learning disabilities. This article calls for a review to rigorously analyse the services and support needed to give people with learning disabilities the same chances and choices as everyone else. It should determine the funding needed to achieve this goal.
