Taras Shevchenko: Beyond the Nation
When: Mon 17 Mar 2014, 18.00-20.30
Where: Conference Centre, Eliot Room
Price: Free, booking essential
In this talk Dr Rory Finnin (University of Cambridge) argues that Taras Shevchenko should be understood not as Ukraine's national bard but as a universal humanist whose verse irrevocably changed the political landscape of modern Europe. Through a close reading of selected poems, he also explains how Shevchenko is best studied as a Modernist who was generations ahead of his time.
Presented in partnership with Cambridge Ukrainian Studies, a programme of the Department of Slavonic Studies at the University of Cambridge. Supported by the Embassy of Ukraine.
