The concluding part of Balkan Day at the British Library is a special screening of the award-winning film The World is Big and Salvation Lurks around the Corner. The film is based on the novel by Ilija Trojanow and directed by Stefan Komandarev - featuring Miki Manojlovic, Carlo Ljubek, Hristo Mutafchiev, Anna Papadopulu and Stefan Valdobrev.

Alex is a young German of Bulgarian descent who suffers severe amnesia in a German hospital after a car crash in which both of his parents die. But out of every tragedy there comes the possibility of redemption, and Alex’s arrives in the form of his charismatic grandfather Bai Dan, the Bulgarian ‘King of Backgammon’. Together they embark on a literal and emotional journey, hitting the road back to the homeland on a tandem bicycle. Recollections, reunions and reconciliation mark their way, in this charming, inter-generational tale. While the story focuses on the relationship between grandfather and grandson, the film also tackles difficult social and political issues within communist Bulgaria in the 1980s.

Presented jointly with The Cultural Institute, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria.
