We offer free workshops and conferences for students and teachers.

Primary workshops

Primary workshop

Suitable for:                  Year 3 – 6
Time:                            10.30-12.00, 13.00-14.30 and 15.30-17.00
Length:                         90 minutes
Group size:                   Minimum 10, maximum 30 per session
Subjects / key skills:     History, Art, Creativity, Research Skills, Visual Literacy

Workshops will promote a creative engagement with the Mughal India exhibition through a number of practical activities tailored for KS2 students. These include storytelling, drawing and other art activities. At the end of the workshop, students will have developed an increased understanding of the history of the Mughal Empire and gained a sense of its historical chronology.

Time:                            10.30-12.00, 13.00-14.30 and 15.30-17.00
Length:                         90 minutes
Group size:                   Minimum 10, maximum 30 per session
Subjects / key skills:     History, Art, Critical Enquiry, Research Skills, Visual Literacy

Students will investigate the history of the Mughal Empire and develop their historical knowledge and skills through direct encounter with the rare manuscripts, paintings and objects on display. They will learn about the politics, society, religion and art of this incredible empire that spread across Central and Southern Asia. Workshops will also promote learning about the history and culture of India and will provide an excellent contextual introduction for the study of the rise of the British Empire in India.

Reading for Pleasure

This full-day conference for secondary school teachers and librarians will explore strategies to engage young people with reading, putting books at the heart of learning. Taking inspiration from the Library's major exhibition, Mughal India: Art, Culture and Empire, speakers will include award-winning author Jamila Gavin and Nikita Lalwani, journalist and author of Gifted and The Village. The event will be chaired by Guardian Books Editor Claire Armitstead.

Changing School History

In partnership with Schools History Project

Changing School History is a day of professional development for secondary school history teachers linked our exhibition, Mughal India: Art, Culture and Empire. The conference will focus on planning for the new curriculum and will include keynote presentations from SHP Director Michael Riley, author and history consultant Jamie Byrom and ex-Director of SHP Chris Culpin, as well as workshops and networking opportunities.
