WiFi at St Pancras – ongoing issues
Since last summer Library users have continued to experience problems using our free WiFi service. You may have had difficulty connecting, slow access or unexpected disconnection.
We wish to apologise again for the poor quality of the service, which we understand is a source of huge frustration for our users. We continue to work hard, alongside the service provider, Regenerate IT, to resolve these problems and deliver a better service.
In the second half of January, the existing network was upgraded. We replaced existing wireless access points with new hardware and initial indications are that the quality of the service has improved as a result.
However, the upgrading work has taken place within the capacity constraints of the existing system infrastructure. This has had difficulty in meeting levels of usage which have increased dramatically in recent years. In the longer term, the Library is reviewing fully its WiFi provision with a view to developing a more robust and flexible service, much better geared towards the evolving needs of our users. At present some users have multiple devices that may be configured to connect to wireless networks automatically if detected. To maximise service capacity for everyone, we would be very grateful if people could connect to their primary device only – or only connect when actually using the service.
People signing up to use the service while on-site at St Pancras have experienced problems registering. While this is clearly not acceptable, and is being addressed, we strongly recommend for the time being that you pre-register before you arrive, using the link directly below.
We will provide another update at the end of February to keep you informed of the progress being made by the infrastructure upgrade. In the meantime, you can receive regular updates on all services at St Pancras via Twitter (@BL_Ref_Services).
Thanks once again for your patience and cooperation.

What should I do if I can't see the British Library wireless network?
If you cannot see the wireless network on your list of available wireless networks you may have a problem with your wireless network adapter. You can try the following
- Ensure that your wireless card is turned on. Some laptops have a switch.
- Move closer to the access point. You may be sitting outside the coverage area.
- Try again. Some wireless adapters can take a minute or two to detect all available wireless networks.
- Restart your laptop or PDA. Sometimes operating systems can get in a muddle if they repeatedly detect and lose a network - a reboot can fix this.
Still having problems?
Although the service is simple to use, there may be times when you need additional help. If, having followed the instructions, you are still having problems connecting to the wireless network or registering with the service please call the helpline on +44 (0)20 8966 1250 (during British Library St Pancras opening hours).
We regret that it is not possible for British Library staff to offer help with connecting to the wireless network.
