Caroline Brazier

As Chief Librarian, Caroline is responsible for all aspects of the curation and management of our collections, in both physical and digital formats. Staff in the Collections Division work across a wide range of professional library, archival, curatorial and research roles, including curation, acquisitions, cataloguing and metadata, conservation, preservation,  digitisation and research support. The division has c. 600 staff who work at St. Pancras and Boston Spa. The main departments and functions include

  • Collections and Curation, including Contemporary British Collections, Western Heritage Collections, European and American Collections, Asian and African Collections
  • Collection Management, including Conservation and Preservation, Cataloguing and Processing, Metadata Services, Resource Discovery and Collection Development
  • Research Engagement, including service and content development for Arts and Humanities, Social Science and Science, Technology and Medicine
  • Digital Scholarship, including digital research and digitisation management
  • Cultural Engagement, broadening the cultural reach of the collections across the UK and internationally
  • Higher Education, developing strategic links with the UK research sector

Caroline is also responsible for the Eccles Centre for American Studies and the British Library Qatar Foundation programme. Before joining the Library, Caroline had over 20 years’ experience in the academic library sector in the UK and Ireland. She has an MA in History from the University of Edinburgh and an MA in Library and Information Studies from University College London.


Current Role Profile  

Current Salary Band - £120,000 to £125,000
