This report summarises the findings of a research project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) investigating the industrial and economic integration in Europe, the subject of concern to several interrelated streams of academic research. Literature on economic integration, on trade and growth, on foreign direct investment (FDI) and growth, and international business literature are relevant for understanding the issue of international industrial networks. While these approaches offer a variety of insights and methodologies which are of relevance for exploring the emerging industrial architecture of the wider Europe, they are also limited and leave some important conceptual and empirical gaps which need to be filled to fully understand the determinants and dynamics of integration.
