The Hay Group 2010 Best Companies for Leadership study shows a fundamental shift in how large business organisations function. “Leading companies today are structured more like a neural network than a hierarchical machine”, says Rick Lash, co-leader of the study and director of the Hay Group leadership and talent practice in Canada. “These companies operate as a flattened matrix, where information and authority move in all directions through the organisation, and managers facilitate diverse teams whose members report to different bosses, come from different cultures, and work in different timezones”.
