This paper presents the findings of Towers Watson's seventh annual survey on pension risk, conducted in the spring of 2010, to obtain a comprehensive picture of post-financial crisis developments in Canadian pension issues. More than 110 senior executives expressed their views on a wide range of topics, including investment strategies, plan design changes such as switching to capital accumulation plan/defined contribution (CAP/DC) plans, and reactions to pension reform legislation. The survey results provide essential insights into defined benefit (DB) plan sponsors' actions for dealing with short-term challenges as well as future strategies for improving the long-term sustainability of the Canadian retirement system.
