This report presents the findings of a survey of asset managers focusing on asset under management (AuM), managed on behalf of pension funds. Key findings:

  1. Alternative assets managed on behalf of pension funds by the top 100 asset managers amounted to $817bn; unchanged from 2008.
  2. For the top 100 managers, Real Estate remains the largest block of alternative pension funds assets.
  3. In 2009, Infrastructure, Commodities and Private Equity Fund of Funds (PEFoF) were the asset classes that grew proportionately at the expenses of Funds of Hedge Funds (FoHF) and Real Estate. 
  4. North America continues to account for the largest amount of pension funds assets in alternatives, followed by Europe and Asia.
  5. The total AuM of the top 100 managers is about $1,694bn of which pension funds assets represent 48%.
