At the British Library, Information Technology – known here simply as ‘Technology’ – consists of a highly professional mixed-skill, multi-disciplinary unit that’s responsible for delivering high value, high quality and high availability digital services for the whole Library.

Technology here is unique. It ultimately helps preserve our history

Our team specialise in everything from Infrastructure and Networking to Development, Testing and Support, Project/Programme Management and Service Assurance and Security. But that’s not the whole story, because, while we’re structured like many other IT departments, the impact of the work that we carry out makes us unique.

Whether we’re working on the network, fixing an end user issue, supporting our Library systems or building new ones, our end goal is always the same – to preserve our heritage – and very few places that you’ll work during your career in technology can make that bold statement.

Each day brings lots of variety, not least as our responsibilities are far and wide and involve delivering projects aligned to the Library’s vision. Ensuring that our services are operational and available and meet our customers’ needs is just one of the challenges we rise to. Implementing an exciting technology programme is another.

And, whatever new task we face, we obsess about the professional management of change, ensuring everything is on time and on budget. We also obsess about service delivery and supporting the business to deliver excellent customer experience.

Above all, we love driving innovative ideas and pathways to support the Library’s challenges and ambitions and support the realisation of its Living Knowledge vision.
