Notes

Siena, 1488. 500 x 335 mm. Artist not identified, may be painted by workshop of Cozzarelli ? (d.1516–17). One of a series of tavolette di Biccherna traditionally produced for the city treasury. Thiese panels were imitated in the 19c by Joni, see C188c11, C188c12 (both digitised). The Spoliation Advisory Panel of 12.06.2014 recommended that the panel should be returned to the heirs of the original owner A.S. Drey under Section 3(2) of the Holocaust (Return of Cultural Objects) Act 2009. The British Library did not contest the claim of the heirs but a mutually agreed sum was arranged between the heirs and the Library to ensure the official ownership was passed to the Library in January 2015. |

Notes
|
Designed by Owen Jones. Printed on the last leaf: "/Illuminated by Owen Jones./". The borders of each leaf are ornamented in the gothic style. Gutta percha binding. The original decorated endpapers are bound in. They show a curling stem and large leaf decorated pattern, printed in blue and in red. Wooden boards, either carved or pressed. The edges and turn-ins are gauffered. On the lower cover, a leaf is shown on each corner, on the centre of the sides, and on the centre head and the centre tail. The border has words in it. An arch is formed at the head by leaves. Within the central panel, a symmetrical pattern is shown of two curling stems and leaves, with a single leaf above. The upper cover has the same border and words within the border. The same two curling stems and leaves are shown at the base. Above this, the title: "/ The/ Preacher/" is shown in high relief, with the capitals "T" and "P" ornamented. The effect of the whole is extravagantly exaggerated. The spine is of leather, ribbed vertically. There are letters blocked along the spine, but the spine is too worn to decipher them. Formerly shelved at: [1. C44.i. [2. C.30.m.5. Text copyright Edmund M B King.

Notes
|
This is one of the covers of a manuscript of the 'Five Protective Hymns', produced in 1659 at the Tarmula Monastery in Kathmandu for the Sakyabhiksu Jakeraja and his family. They are painted in gouache on wood, and provide the earliest dated manuscript paintings in the new Indian-influenced style. The back cover, shown here, depicts the donor and his wife on the right and his sons and their wives on the left as they pay homage to Manusri Arapaca.
