NotesMS. inscription "French block of Houdin - early". In the early 1850s the Houdin illustration was adapted for use in stock playbills of James Savren. A typical playbill described him as "Professor Savren, the modern Faust! In his splendid temple of enchantment" ('Magic' 5. March, 1905, p.45, cited in Hagy, James: Early English conjuring collectors: James Savren and Henry Evanion, 1985. p. 116; 2nd ed., 2020 pp. 126-7).
