The Lamentation
Description: A montage (now dismembered) of a full-page miniature of the Lamentation with Christ laid on a bier covered with cloths beneath the cross, the Virgin and the Holy Women surrounding him, a historiated border of cartouches and medallions containing scenes and figures painted in gold monochrome: the Coronation of the Virgin, the Resurrection, Christ before Pilate, the Harrowing of Hell, and the four Evangelists, and the inscription 'Sic oportuit / pati Christum/ et ita intrare / in gloriam suam’ from Luke 24:26, reclining prophets bearing texts from Amos 9:6 'qui edificat ascensionem suam'; Ezekiel 37:12 'educam vos de sepulchris vestris popule [sic; populus] meus'; Hosea 13:14 'O mors ero mors tua morsus tuus ero inferne' and John 19:37 'Viderunt [sic; Videbunt] in quem transfixerunt', and the inscription 'Dux vitae / mortuus / regnat / vivus' divided among the four corners, measuring 335 x 245 mm (f. 91a); a section of scroll, measuring 15 x 40 mm (f. 91b) and a strip of parchment, measuring 15 x 40 mm (f. 91c). On the reverse is text of the Sanctus from the Palm Sunday procession liturgy 'Sanctus, Sanctus, / Sanctus d[omi]n[u]s deus / sabaoth. Pleni sunt c[a]eli et terra gloria tua, / Osa[n]na in excelsis. Be / nedictus qui venit in / nomine domini Osa[n] / na in excelsis' (f. 91a verso) and the letters ‘h’ and ‘u’ (91b verso).
