Bas-de-page scene of a hermit sitting outside a tavern drinking ale; the alewife approaches him with a flagon. Subsequent scenes depict the hermit fornicating with the alewife, murdering the miller who catches them, and going mad with remorse; he turns into a wild man, is ultimately forgiven for his sins, and returns to his life as a hermit. |
