Inscription
Description: Inscription by Henry Manners, 2nd earl of Rutland (b. 1526, b. 1563), courtier and soldier, arrested at the accession of Queen Mary in 1553: 'This boke was sume tyme [under erasure: the Erle of Rutelands], and it was his wil / that it shulde by successioun all way / go to the [under erasure: lande of Ruteland] or to / [partially erased: him that linyally succedis by reson / of inheritaunce in the seide lande'].
