Additional 12531 f. 11 Geneological tree of England and Castile
Geneological tree of England and Castile
Description: The only extant unpainted leaf of the genealogy is a fortunate survival that reveals the intricacy of de Holanda’s designs. Bening apparently followed de Holanda’s drawings closely, developing the carefully composed figures into lively, richly textured people defined by colour, light and shadow. While de Holanda’s own colouring is less animated, his masterful draftsman’s technique is evident here in the modelling of his figures in cross-hatching and short parallel pen-strokes. The similarity in design between the drawing and the tree of John of Gaunt (displayed to the right) has suggested that the latter is a re-working of the present composition. Both leaves represent the same monarchs of England and Castile with some variation – for example, the figure of Manuel I’s father, another Infante Dom Fernando (d. 1470), is included only in the drawing.
Origin: Portugal (Lisbon) and S. Netherlands (Bruges)
