| Description: |
Christ hangs crucified, with the crucified thieves on either side. The Virgin swoons in the foreground, comforted by two women (the two other Marys) and St John the Evangelist. Angels are depicted above the miniature: the one on the left averts its gaze from the Crucifixion, clutching its hands to its breast, while the one on the left throws its hands up in despair. In the smaller miniature below, Christ is tied to a pillar and flogged. The text is Lamentations 2:8. In the initial 'C' (ogitavit dominus dissipare), a woman reads a book. The rinceaux, acanthus and interlace border is embellished with birds, including parrots, a woodpecker (?), a cockerell, and a jay. |
