25 miniatures, accompanied by large historiated, inhabited or decorated initials, some developing foliate extensions into the margins (on f. 6 developing a full border), in colours and gold (ff. 4, 6, 21, 43v, 61, 85, 100v, 106v, 117v, 126, 134, 142v, 149, 161v, 170, 176v, 185, 191v, 204, 213v, 225v, 232v, 245, 252, 265). Smaller and small decorated foliate initials, many including human heads or zoomorphic figures, mostly with extensions into the margins, in colours and gold. Large and small initials in blue with red pen-flourishing. Small initials in plain red for the text. Small initials in red with purple pen-flourishing for the glosses. Paraph marks in plain red or blue. |

Unidentified owners, 1395 and 1499: inscription mentioning an earthquake in Cologne in 1395 '…et veram est quod tunc temporis eram in colonia…', followed by a note on an earthquake in Padua in 1499 (f. 1). Taken to Padua in 1399: inscribed 'Dominus Henricus d'Alem(ani)a conduxit [... uncertain reading] librum die xxviiij Junii d(?) 1399 [followed by a cropped subscription]' (f. 4; cf. Arundel 433, 439, 449, and 453); on the meaning of such inscriptions, see Luciano Gargan, 'L'enigmatico 'conduxit': libri e dogana a Padova fra Tree Quattrocento', Quaderni per la storia dell'università di Padova, 16 (1983), 1-41, and Luciano Gargan, 'Nuovi codici 'condotti' a Padova nel Tre e Quattrocento', Quaderni per la storia dell'università di Padova, 22-23 (1989-90), 1-57. Inscription, 16th-century: 'Iohannes episcopus servuus servorum dei…' (f. 1, upper right corner). Inscription, 16th-century: 'Marie de Morel' (f. 271v). Johann Pirckheimer (b. 1440, d. 1501), son of Hans Pirckheimer, Nuremberg patrician, jurist, diplomat, and humanist: inscribed over erased ownership inscription in the explicit of the apparatus 'Iste liber est Johannis Pirckheimer de Nurnberga dyocesii Babenbergensis.' (f. 271). ? Thomas Howard (b. 1585, d. 1646), 2nd earl of Arundel, 4th earl of Surrey, and 1st earl of Norfolk, art collector and politician. Henry Howard (b. 1628, d. 1684), 6th duke of Norfolk, presented to the Royal Society in 1667. The Royal Society, London (its ink stamp: 'Soc. Reg. Lond / ex dono HENR. HOWARD / Norfolciensis.', f. 4). Purchased by the British Museum from the Royal Society of London together with 549 other Arundel manuscripts in 1831. |
