1 full border in colours and gold (f. 1). 4 partial foliate borders and initials in colours and gold, the last two inhabited by a bird and a mask, and a peacock, respectively, at the beginning of each book (except the first, which is lost) (ff. 26, 73v, 105, 143v). Small gold initials on blue and red grounds, with illuminated foliate decoration extending into the margins. Small gold initials with blue penwork decoration, and blue initials with red penwork decoration. |

Early 16th-century notes (ff. 11v-12). 16th-century inscription: 'The lorde be thanked for his gifts & mercies evermore wch he Doth shew unto his saynts to him be lawd therfore' (f. 34). Numerous inscription in English and Latin in various 16th-century humanistic cursive hands, including 'Jacobus' and 'Astringham' (f. 159). ? Thomas Howard (b. 1585, d. 1646), 2nd earl of Arundel, 4th earl of Surrey, and 1st earl of Norfolk, art collector and politician. Henry Howard (b. 1628, d. 1684), 6th duke of Norfolk, presented to the Royal Society in 1667. The Royal Society, London: its ink stamp: 'Soc. Reg. Lond / ex dono HENR. HOWARD / Norfolciensis.' (f. 1v); its book-plate (f. iii verso). Purchased by the British Museum from the Royal Society together with 549 other Arundel manuscripts in 1831. |
