Samuel, the scribe: inscribed with his name (f. 190). Joab Emmanuel Finzi (da Arezzo?): his coat of arms ? (f. 76v); it is identical with the coat of arms represented in Harley 5716-5717, the patron of which was Joab Emmanuel. Thus the codex most probably was ordered by the same patron, Joab Emmanuel. Domenico Irosolimitano (fl. last quarter of the 16th century-first quarter of the 17th century), censor: inscribed with his name, 1598 (f. 439v); see William Popper, The Censorship of Hebrew Books (New York: KTAV Publishing House, 1969), appendix § 62-74.) Giovanni Domenico Carretto, Italian censor (active in the first quarter of the 17th century): inscribed with his name (f. 439v); see William Popper, The Censorship of Hebrew Books (New York: KTAV Publishing House, 1969), pp. 100-101, and appendix § 80-84. Contents of manuscript in English (f. 1*). Edward Harley: bought by him through Nathaniel Noel (b. 1681, d. 1753), bookseller (see Wright and Wright 1966; Wright 1972); inscription by Harley's librarian, Humfrey Wanley, 18 January 1723/4 (f. 1). The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library. |
