Artists Niccolò di Giacomo di Nascimbene, known as Niccolò da Bologna (documented 1349 - c. 1403)
Decoration 1 historiated initial 'E' in colours and gold, of Christ in Majesty, his robes covered with the words 'Rex Regum', surrounded by the busts of twelve saints including John the Baptist, Jerome, and a bishop, with foliate extension of acanthus leaves and bezants.
Dimensions in mm 475 x 230
Official foliation Whole album: ff. 12 (+ unfoliated modern paper leaves at the beginning and at the end). This cutting is foliated as f. 10 (2).
Form Parchment cutting mounted on paper, kept bound in an album with other cuttings and leaves.
Binding BM/BL in-house.
Provenance John Matthew Gutch (b. 1776, d. 1861), journalist and author: his sale, 16 March 1858, lot 1831: purchased by the British Museum for £16.
Notes Italian cutting.
Add 27428 and Add. 11990 (dated 1378) also have miniatures attributed to Niccolò da Bologna (Francesca Pasut, 'Nicolò di Giacomo di Nascimbene', in Dizionario Biografico dei Miniatori Italiani: Secoli IX-XVI, ed. by Milvia Bollati (Milano: Bonnard, 2004), pp. 827-32 (pp. 829-30).
