Artists Nicoḷ di Giacomo di Nascimbene (documented in Blogna 1349- c. 1403)
Decoration 1 historiated and foliate initial 'L' in colours and gold, of the Martyrdom of John the Baptist, introducing the introit to the Mass for the feast of the Beheading of the saint (29 August): 'Loquebar de testimonis tuis in conspectu regum'. On the reverse, a stave with musical notation and partial text: 'per fa / m ut'.

Official foliation Mounted parchment cutting, foliated as 'D'.
Form Parchment cutting in a double-sided window mount, kept in a box with other mounted cuttings.

Provenance The present cutting was taken from a manuscript closely related to a group of eight choirbooks made for either the Olivetan abbey of San Michele in Bosco, Bologna or San Benedetto Novello, Padua, a monastery of the same order (now Modena, Biblioteca Nazionale Estense) (see Francesca Pasut, 'Nicoḷ di Giacomo di Nascimbene', in Dizionario Biografico dei Miniatori Italiani: Secoli IX-XVI, ed. by Milvia Bollati (Milano: Bonnard, 2004), pp. 827-32).
Miss Violeta Harris (b.1898, d.1989): apparently purchased by her soon after World War II through her brother, Tomás Harris, managing director of the Spanish Art Gallery in London.
Accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of inheritance tax from the estates of Miss Violeta Harris and her sister, Mrs Conchita Wolff, and allocated to the British Library through the National Art-Collections Fund in 1992.
